Recommended Prior Learning

Year 9 Mathematics & Statistics is a core subject for four periods per week.

WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER:

The Mathematics course is based on three strands: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics. The Year 9 content involves levels 3, 4, and 5 of the New Zealand Mathematics Curriculum, but most students will focus on level 4.

METHODS OF LEARNING:

Students engage in a variety of learning activities and make use of appropriate technology. The focus will be on problem solving and investigative work, and through this students will develop their use of symbols, graphs and diagrams to help them find and communicate patterns and relationships, and develop models to represent both real life and hypothetical situations. Students will be encouraged to enjoy and succeed in their mathematics learning. Opportunities for students to enter in local, national and international competitions are encouraged.

WHERE DOES THE SUBJECT LEAD:

All students study Mathematics for at least three years. Our Mathematics department offers an excellent range of courses at senior level, giving students the opportunity to follow a number of pathways in gaining National Qualifications. We aim to provide all students with the essential mathematical skills and qualifications for their future tertiary training and/or positions in the workforce.
