WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER:
Introduction to Te Reo Māori. Greetings in Te Reo Māori. Correct pronunciation of Māori place names and Māori words. Observing Tikanga in our whare, learning karakia to begin and end our lessons. Participating in Pōwhiri at school and Manu Kōrero.
METHODS OF LEARNING:
Kōrero: Speaking about oneself (mihi, pepeha) and interacting with others in the class.
Whakarongo: Following simple instructions and commands. Participating in listening activities
Pānui: Reading and understanding basic texts, comprehension – learning new words
Tuhituhi: Writing simple sentences in Māori
Mahi ā Te Rehia: Learning iwi waiata compositions which may include Haka, Poi, Rākau
WHERE DOES THE SUBJECT LEAD:
Te Reo Māori - Year 10 – 13
Māori Performing Arts – Year 11 – 13
Tertiary – Ara, Polytechnics, Universities, Teaching (Early Childhood, Kohanga Reo, Primary, Secondary), Law
Employment – Public servant (government position), Journalism, (Māori Television and Radio), travel Industry
