In Year 10 Social Studies is a core subject, for four periods per week.


WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER:
Social Studies develops the essential skills common to all Curricula through the processes of inquiry, values exploration, key competencies and social decision making and action. The Year 10 theme of work is "Conflict, at Home and Away" and units of work cover societies today and in the past, in different parts of the world, and are designed to make pupils think.

The topics include:

  • Aotearoa New Zealand’s Histories 
  • Human Rights
  • The Treaty of Waitangi
  • Antarctica
  • Children of the Holocaust
  • Earth under pressure
  • Today and Tomorrow’s World (Current Events)
  • Making a Change – Social Action 

METHODS OF LEARNING:

Learning takes place using a variety of resources including textbooks, newspapers and magazines, library resources, documentaries, computers and visual materials.  Homework includes individual research topics and current events

WHERE DOES THE SUBJECT LEAD?
Social Studies aims to enable students to participate in a changing society as informed confident and responsible citizens and leads to any career requiring communication and thinking skills. Many students will go on to study Geography, History or Senior Social Studies in Year 11. Subjects such as Classical Studies and Tourism are also offered at Year 12 and beyond.
