WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER:
Outdoor Education will give you experiences, knowledge and skills to enhance your enjoyment of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique outdoor environments.
The course will cover:
- Adventure and team-building games to develop trust, kotahitanga/ team-work, problem solving and interpersonal skills
- Learning about Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique outdoor environments
- Kaitiakitanga and conservation including pest control and tree planting
- Introduction to risk management and trip planning
- Clothing for the outdoor environment
- Cooking in the outdoors
- Introduction to rock climbing and abseiling
- Caving experience at Cave Stream
- Achievement of success via realistic challenges within the outdoor environment
METHODS OF LEARNING:
- In-class learning of outdoor concepts
- Whole-class, co-operative and practical learning experiences
- Participation in a range of outdoor pursuits
- A three-day camping and outdoor experience in Craigeburn Forest Park
- Field trips to local conservation initiatives such as tree planting and environmental restoration
- Field trip to Pūtaringamotu/ Riccarton bush
