Year 10 Dance - Full Year

Course Description

This is a full year course where students will develop a practical and theoretical knowledge of Dance techniques and styles. Students will learn about choreography and create their own work. Analysis of Dance work and expression will be emphasized.

Physical exercise, co-ordination and aerobic stamina are key components in the process of learning about Dance. There is a focus on communication as a tool for students to explore different ways to interact and understand people. The kinesthetic approach used in Dance encourages and motivates students’ engagement. Dance involves experiential learning opportunities within different cultures where students share their cultural expertise.

Dance is an NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 subject as well as Scholarship Dance. It is a University Entrance subject and nationally available in the Arts curriculum.

Dance is currently the fastest growing NCEA subject in New Zealand.

Course Overview

Term 1
Term one will be skills building, learning choreography and exploring the elements of dance.

Term 2
Term two will involve research and exploration of a range of dance styles around the world.

Term 3
Term three will introduce students to creating their own choreography, in groups. Students will have the opportunity to perform in Infinite, the annual dance showcase.

Term 4
Term 4 students will learn group dances, view and respond to New Zealand choreography and widen their vocabulary in different dance styles.
