Course Description

WHAT THE COURSE WILL COVER:

Outdoor Education will give you experiences, knowledge and skills to enhance your enjoyment of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique outdoor environments.

The course will cover:

  • Adventure and team-building games to develop trust, kotahitanga/ team-work, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Learning about Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique outdoor environments
  • Kaitiakitanga and conservation including pest control and tree planting
  • Introduction to risk management and trip planning
  • Clothing for the outdoor environment
  • Cooking in the outdoors
  • Introduction to rock climbing and abseiling
  • Caving experience at Cave Stream  
  • Achievement of success via realistic challenges within the outdoor environment


METHODS OF LEARNING:

  • In-class learning of outdoor concepts
  • Whole-class, co-operative and practical learning experiences
  • Participation in a range of outdoor pursuits
  • A three-day camping and outdoor experience in Craigeburn Forest Park
  • Field trips to local conservation initiatives such as tree planting and environmental restoration
  • Field trip to PÅ«taringamotu/ Riccarton bush
